The Holy Spirit was at work in your life well ahead of you ever giving Him a thought. That’s mind-blowing when you think about it, yet it’s comforting too. It’s as if you didn’t have to ask God to move in your life, because He was already moving. He was already working, initiating how the Father would draw you to Jesus.

Jesus said people would not be able to come to Him unless the Father drew or granted them to come (see John 6:44, 65). He also said, “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). In this divine dance of the Father drawing us to His Son and the Son making a way for us to the Father, we often overlook the role of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the One who works at the bidding of the Father, inviting us to the dance, as it were. In this way, the Holy Spirit establishes a personal connection between us and God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

[The Holy Spirit] is actively involved in every facet of our lives as believers, doing things in us, for us, and through us even when we aren’t aware of it. Often, we will look back on events in our lives and realize God was at work. We didn’t know it at the time, but He was acting before we could even think about asking.

Consider the following ways the Holy Spirit works in your life:

  • He Makes First Contact with Us

    • Jesus told His disciples the Holy Spirit “will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgement” (John 16:8). According to Jesus, this action is what the Holy Spirit does when we first encounter Him. He is the One who initiates contact with us. He will convict and draw each of us in the most perfect way for us individually.

  • He Regenerates Us

    • Once the Holy Spirit makes contact with us, the next thing He does is regenerate us when we are born again in Jesus. When we turn to the Lord and recognize our own sin and guilt, we place our faith in Jesus’ finished work on the cross. Like Adam, God created you once as flesh. Now in Christ, you are born the second time of the Spirit, and that is how He regenerates you. He gives you new life.

  • He Frees Us

    • We have eternity dwelling inside us, yet we know we still live in a fallen and broken world until Jesus comes back. Even now, we are surrounded by sin, death, destruction, poverty, racism, and other things we know are not submitted to the will of God. The Good News is that Jesus said the Holy Spirit would be our Leader, our Guide, our Comforter, and our Truth Teller. His truth sets us free. The Spirit brings greater levels and understanding of freedom as we surrender to Him.

  • He Sanctifies Us

    • Sanctification is the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He is actively conforming us to the image of Jesus. His sanctification is a silent work in our lives, and we are often unaware of what He is doing. The Holy Spirit wants to use every difficult situation to shape, define, and form us to become more like Jesus.

  • He Seals Us

    • The Holy Spirit seals us on the day of our salvation. Consider what Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:13-14. He said the Holy Spirit seals you, which means the Father has taken your inheritance and marked it as belonging to you. That means everything belongs to you. The Kingdom belongs to you. Salvation belongs to you, as well as eternal life and the ultimate redemption of your body. If you are in Christ, then there is an inheritance for you in the Kingdom of God.
